A Concert at The Trane Studio in Honour of a Courageous Battle!

Singer/songwriter Donna Greenberg met Cynthia Brown, a lawyer with a great passion for the arts, at a salsa class five years ago.  The two became fast friends.  Last summer, Cynthia was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer, and is presently undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

On Tuesday May 3rd, at 8 p.m., the songstress will be taking to The Trane Studio stage performing a musical evening in support of Princess Margaret Hospital, in honour of her dear friend, Cynthia.  One dollar from each ticket and CD sold will benefit the Lymphoma Research Fund at Princess Margaret Hospital.  To encourage additional funds, donation forms will be available at the event.

Donna will be joined in performance by pianist Jordan Klapman and guitarist Tony Quarrington for concert chockfull of Donna’s original tunes and much-loved jazz standards.  A special moment in the evening will be the dedication of Donna’s own song, “You’re My Summer Peach” to Cynthia.   Donna feels this cheery song, off her critically acclaimed second album, Mav’rik, truly reflects Cynthia’s’ personality.

“I love and admire Cynthia’s fighting spirit in the face of this great adversity,” states Donna. “She’s a grand optimist.  Cynthia bought a new bright red car in the midst of chemotherapy and is making plans to take friends on fun trips, once this disease is behind her.  Cynthia is a great inspiration to me!

“I am deeply grateful for the kindness, dedication and knowledge of the staff at Princess Margaret Hospital, and the support they provide not only to the patients, but to their family and friends. I am so grateful to use my voice to honour and raise money for this remarkable institution.”

On Saturday February 19, 2011 Ms Donna Greenberg, from Toronto, Ontario, returned to Conversations to talk about and share her second CD project Mav’rik.

Mav’rik is an eclectic collection of self penned hits,  beautiful instrumentation and Donna’s wonderful voice. The music moves the listener, from the romantic ballads to the beautiful lullaby to fun jazz to the spiritual, it’s a great listen  It is always a joy to speak with Donna, she is so passionate about music, as am I. When I asked her why she named the project Mav’rik, she didn’t hesitate to respond that she considered herself to be a musical mav’rik in that she has studied all genres and styles. Her first CD, Stranger showed us a bit of that, but Mav’rik defines HER. This certainly one to add to you collection!

Donna Greenberg hails from Toronto, and Mav’rik is her sophomore effort.
Those not familiar with Greenberg, myself included until the arrival of this disk, she has a sound somewhere in the realm between jazz and Broadway show turns.
I love the old 1920′s gravely male vocal opening on You’re My Summer Peach. It is a nice counterbalance to Greenberg’s own smooth vocals. There is some sweet horn work on the number too.
In terms of older influence, Old Country Road takes the listener back a few decades for its influence as well.
Greenberg likes to add mood with the opening arrangements of her songs. She does it with a sort of Medieval feel opening to the beautiful Nature’s Glory. It is the prettiest number here, and the tin flute by Tom Skublics is a memorable aspect of this CD which will stay with the listener for a long time after the CD is put away.
Greenberg switches things up within the broad realm of jazz too, including the Latin La Nina de Rosa, which might seem a tad out of place, but stands as a counterpoint to the rest of the CD.
There is a gospel-inspired piece mixed in as well, with the song Praise Be.
You know how some voices seem ideally suited to a style of music? Well Greenberg’s seems to be have been born to jazz. She sells all 12 songs via crystal clear vocals.
Jazz fans will like this, and the music is accessible enough, and Greenberg’s vocals pleasing enough to satisfy a broader audience too.

Donna Greenberg has plenty to celebrate. The Toronto-based singer, songwriter and lyricist just released Mav’rik, her second CD. And what a release it was. Mav’rik is an eclectic mix of 12 original songs that she composed. The CD reflects Greenberg’s heartfelt, yet powerful lyrics in four languages with haunting melodies, brought to richness with honed musicians, producer and musical director, Jordan Klapman’s arrangements and the orchestrations of Tony Quarrington.
Mav’rik is romantic blend CD that crosses boundaries by boldly jumping genres — salsa, lullaby, Celtic folk, tango, swing, bossa nova in one album.
Before realizing her dream as a singer and songwriter, Greenberg was an accomplished choreographer, dancer and dance filmmaker. Her early influences included jazz, opera, classical music, musical theatre, and liturgical music. She graduated from The University of Toronto with a BA in English Literature. She continued her education with extensive musical training making her a sought after classical solo artist who performed in five languages, a skill set reflected in Mav’rik. Perhaps releasing the CD in different languages would draw a bigger audience.
A Tribute to Gershwin, Porter and Rodgers, was Greenberg’s first foray into jazz, a one-woman show, for which she sang, danced, and wrote. Now, jazz is the mainstay of her live performances. Greenberg has been collaborating with arranger Jordan Klapman since her debut release, Stranger in 2009. Stranger hit the Top 30 chart on CIUT and continues to be played on-air worldwide. Greenberg was named Jazz Vocalist of the Month: October 2010 on Bob Birch Radio in the United Kingdom.
Greenberg’s first love is performing her fresh, original material in addition to introducing audiences to rare and unusual musical finds.
