Director’s Blog
When I first conceive of a dance film subject, its essence originates inside, in my inner eye/ear so to speak. My task becomes to create a work of art that will reveal this vision and to communicate its emotional and psychological reality to others. The medium of film accomplishes this more successfully than any other means. Through film, I am able to share the prism-like convergence of dance, music, narrative, light and sound. It is the best means to turn the inner vision out and to navigate through the myriad ways of what I see, hear and feel inside on a given subject. My dance films are primarily non-verbal. Since I am working in the language of neo-classical ballet, the challenge becomes even greater since many audience members may not have yet formed an appreciation for such a highly structured and formal type of art. As an artist, this has inspired me to take up the gauntlet and create works of beauty and truth that might lead others to open their eyes to new ways of seeing and experiencing.
